    Steven Carter

In my 30 years as a licensed psychologist, I have enjoyed working with adolescents, adults, and couples. I have served as a medical expert at approximately 10,000 hearings for Social Security Disability benefits, personal injury claims, and criminal law trials. I have spoken and published nationally on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder; Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Seasonal Affective Disorder; Traumatic Brain Injury; Neuropsychological Testing; Chronic Pain; and Disability Claims. I am eager to hear your story and to use my experience to help you. I hold an advanced certificate in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) from the Albert Ellis Institute. REBT is one of the original forms of cognitive behavior therapy. It's an action-oriented psychotherapy that teaches individuals to take charge of their own happiness. REBT teaches you how to maintain enduring happiness and achieve your goals. You'll learn to identify the specific beliefs causing the feelings and actions that that maintain your difficulties. I know that your beliefs originate in your past and that they include your values and assumptions from your relationships. We can’t change your past or other people, but we can change how you respond to those things now. We'll identify, challenge, and change the beliefs that are harmful to you now regardless when they started. I use an active, collaborative, teaching, and empowering approach. We’ll use spoken and written exercises to zero in on your core upsetting beliefs, but you'll spend most of your time outside of meetings with me. That's why I’ll usually expect you to complete written homework or behavioral experiments for additional practice between our sessions. Changing is hard work! If it was easy, then you likely would've already done it. In my experience, most people who practice between sessions with me, almost always improve. Most people also become more resilient and better able to cope with new problems that occur after we stop meeting. I aim to do more than simply help you cope with why you contacted me this time. My goal is for you to learn to help yourself so you have lifelong benefits from our time working together.
